This April 22nd marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day! In honor of Earth Day and in an attempt to minimize my pretty enormous stash of craft supplies before we pack up and move at the end of May (Spring cleaning!), I’ll be participating in the April Stash Bush. One thing you should know about me is that I, having been in school for literally all of my life (at least the part I can remember), love deadlines. I actually kind of need them to get things done sometimes, and I often set them for myself. I’ve already gathered some pretty sweet project ideas, including:
- Underwear made from old t-shirts (I have a few patterns in mind, and I’m trying to settle on one)
- Tea towels from linen shower curtain remnants, possibly dyed depending on what colors I have lying around
- A cake or cupcake stand using some of the thrifted dishes I’ve picked up
- A patchwork blanket made from old sweaters
I came up with these projects based on my knowledge of the materials I have tucked away in my craft cabinet. What do you have an excess of, and what would you like to turn it into?

I have some pink dye that I have been meaning to use for literally two years, and I would love to make underwear with you!
If your extra sweaters are proper woolen ones, you can turn them into all sorts of interesting things after “machine felting” them. The process is more correctly called fulling, but you’ll have better luck looking for machine felting. There are some darling handbags out there made this way and I also love mug insulators that are machine felted.
Dawn, I’ve found some dingy old t-shirts that would be perfect for this.
Melanie, that’s a great idea! Those sound like they’d make great gifts, too. I’ll have to check the labels on my sweaters and let you know if they’re wool–a lot of them are cheap thrift store finds.
