This picture sums up my entire weekend. I was doubly, delightfully unproductive because our program hosted a visiting poet and Selena and Ben were came to visit as well. There was simply too much fun to be had–too much king cake to eat, to much wine to drink, too many episodes of Community to watch, etc. So instead of tackling all the things I’ve neglected all weekend, today I am sipping ginger and honey tea (a great remedy for when you’ve had too much of just about anything) and reading Missing You, Metropolis by the very talented (and incredibly fun!) Gary Jackson. At some point I’ll have to actually get some work done, but I’m not going to think about that right now.

Can we talk about my hair for a minute?
Dear Readers,
I’m a chicken when it comes to changing my hair. Once I find something that I think works for me, I’ll go on like that for years. Get ready for more pictures of me in one post than all the others I’ve ever posted combined, because here’s a very boring recap of the last four years of my hair:

Late 2007/Early 2008 with my friend Mandi, not long after I chopped it all off for Locks of Love (so I think this is my natural hair color?). I kept letting it grow until...

May 2009, with my friend Chelsey, when it had gotten this long, and I was definitely already using Henna.

February 2011, a week or so ago, with my niece Audrey. Over Christmas break I decided I was sick of my long hair and wanted a drastic change, so I got four or five inches cut. That turned out to be not so drastic after all.
So now I’m in a haircut rut (har har). I want to do something awesome, but I don’t have a lot of money to spend on a sweet haircut (grad school, remember?), and I’m not so sure I’m ready to go boy-short, no matter how tempting every photo I see of Michelle Williams is.

I think my forehead is too small to pull this off; I've been told I actually have a threehead. But, boy, doesn't she look dreamy?
I’m tempted to say the solution might be the bob-ish hairstyle I’m sporting in picture #2, but I suspect I may only be saying that because I was so thin and that dress (which didn’t fit last time I checked) was dress was so cute. An additional note: Sometime between pictures #2 and #3 I started wearing my glasses full-time, and I think that might further complicate the situation. As I’m sure you’re aware of, the combination of a nose ring and thick-frame glasses means I’ve got a lot going on around my face, so I don’t want to complicate things too much with a flashy haircut. I can’t even wear headbands most of the time because I overwhelm myself every time I look in the mirror. To make matters worse, my hair grows very quickly, and my dear friend Allie just chopped all of her hair off, and it looks awesome, so I don’t want to look like a copycat (especially a poor one).
So, readers, as you can see this is quite a sticky situation. To make matters worse, my roots are about an inch long, so my hair should probably be colored within the next few day (but if I’m going to cut it, I’d like to do so first, because coloring all this hair is really a hassle). Take pity on me by offering up your sage advice, and I’ll repay you with plenty of pictures of whatever I decide to do (no matter how it turns out!). Thanks in advance.

Snow Day (Or, I Thought Louisiana was Supposed to be Warm!)
Growing up I always imagined my teachers were sad when school was closed, but I think it’s safe to say that wad a dumb assumption because today has been the dreamiest. I was able to sit and sip tea while wrapped in a quilt all day long. Catching up on work was even mildly enjoyable, and I’m definitely looking forward to another day full of the same thing tomorrow. I hope all of you get the same opportunity to snuggle up somewhere warm do nothing but eat soup and drink hot tea for a couple of days

Happy Friday! (Or, Cats Don’t Understand the Concepts of School and Work)

Chowder isn't much for book learnin'. He's actually waiting for Dawn and me to leave the room so he can dig in/eat the plants next to this bookcase.
Most of the time I’m equally cheerful throughout the week, but the past couple days have been very busy, and I woke up tired today. There’s pretty much nothing I’d rather do right now than crawl back into bed and sleep a couple more hours (or days). Since I can’t do that, I thought I’d share some cute cat pictures this morning. On days like today I’m jealous of my cats because they don’t have to go to school or work. In fact, they refuse to do anything they don’t want to do and spend most of the day sleeping together on my bed in the sun.

Karen’s Botanicals Skincare
I must’ve been an angel all last year because Santa was too nice to me. Two of my most-used gifts so far have been Karen’s Botanicals Gentle Cleansing Lotion and Perfect Lotion. Dawn has been a pretty devoted follower of Karen for a while; I’ve heard nothing but good things about almost every Karen’s Botanicals product she has tried. And surely I’ve told you guys about my total lack of a skincare routine? Until now, I’d been unable to find anything with barely decent ingredients that was close to affordable and worked well with my crazy (combination, hyper-sensitive, prone to clogged pores) skin. I’d been washing my face with Dr. Bronner’s, the same stuff I use in the shower (and in the kitchen), but my skin had become pretty irritated. After finally accepting that Dr. Bronner’s is simply much too harsh for washing my face every day, I put some of Karen’s gentler skincare products on my wishlist.
And I got them! We didn’t open gifts until late on Sunday, January 2nd, so I’ve been using these products for less than a week. However, I’ve been using them much more regularly because they’re so enjoyable. The cleanser reminds me of a slightly thinner cold cream–something I’ve always thought of as very fancy but could never bring myself to use because of its universally horrible ingredients (no matter the brand). The lotion is on the lighter side and is thankfully unscented (sometimes smells make me queasy), but does a great job at making my face and neck feel smooth all day. I’ve even noticed that my makeup goes on smoother, though I’ll admit I haven’t felt the need to wear it as often. I did briefly consider posting a picture of my naked face (which I took at the same time as the picture above, directly after washing and moisturizing), but thought better of it. The only real downside is that my face is so soft that I can’t stop touching it (and, worse, asking other people to), which I know puts tons of bacteria on my sensitive face. Oh well!
