Homemade Fig Newtons

As I mentioned last week, I recently came into possession of a lot of figs.  We turned a lot of them in to jam and preserves, but I was still left with at least a gallon of fresh, beautiful figs.  They're great to eat whole, but one of my favorite incarnations of figs has always been fig newtons.  I made a huge batch of these and within a couple of days they were gone, so I guess I'm not the only one who loves fig newtons!  This recipe is definitely going into my recipe book to be made again. For Filling: 5-6...

Lemon Fusilli (sort of)

Kyle and I stumbled upon this recipe about six months ago, and it's become one of our favorites because it's ridiculously easy and very filling.  Two of the tastiest things I can think of are heavy cream and tomatoes--throw in lemon and spinach, and my world is pretty much rocked.  This should be made with fusili, not elbow macaroni, but in all honesty we've used just about every kind of noodle available and it always turns out just fine.  This recipe comes from the fabulous Ina Garten via The Dreamy Dish. To make this, you'll need:

Dawn’s Famous Muffin Recipe

muffin time

Dawn, my younger sister and health and beauty blogger over at Turby and John, is visiting today to share her famous (at least among our circle of friends and family) muffin recipe. I've eaten more of these than I'd like to admit, so I can testify to their deliciousness. Welcome, Dawn! I truly am crazy about muffins. I can easily think of ten reasons why I should not eat them, but sometimes I throw caution to the wind (not entirely, though, since I tend to bake with organic unbleached flour and sugar...which makes me feel better than it...

Quick and Easy Sun Dried Tomato Pesto Pasta

The basil I planted early this spring has been growing like a weed, so I seriously cut it back today and make some pesto cream pasta.  I am too lazy and poor to make a special trip to the grocery store, so I just used what we had on hand and it turned out pretty well.  The only change I plan on making next time is using heavy cream instead of milk if I have it.  I tend to think that no matter what the dish is, heavy cream will probably make it taste better.  I really like the combination...

Apple Brown Bessie

The best and worst thing about being home is that I'm surrounded by good food all the time.  For example, today for lunch I had a wonderful salad with lots of spinach, baby greens, cherry tomatoes, and a sprinkling of almonds and goat cheese.  I was feeling really proud of myself until my Nana walked in the back door with something hot, cinnamon-y, and wrapped in foil.  It smelled so good, I knew I was going to eat way too much of it before I even tasted it.  My grandmother calls this an apple cobbler.  She got the recipe from...

Hershey’s Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe

Overall, yesterday was a pretty lazy day.  We went to my grandparents' house for a while, scored some discount plants at Lowes (more on that later), swam a little, and watched a movie.  In other words, we did absolutely nothing to warrant making five dozen chocolate chip cookies.  Yet we did.  It started out innocently enough: we had salads for lunch and wanted a sweet treat (terrible logic, I know) but didn't want to eat something from a package (at least we had that going for us?).  I decided to make chocolate chip cookies from the recipe on the back...

Asparagus Salad with Roasted Peppers and Goat Cheese

A couple of our professors invited Kyle and me over for dinner one night last week.  The whole evening was a lot of fun, but one of my favorite parts was this delicious salad.  Asparagus is one of my favorite vegetables, and the combination of asparagus, roasted red peppers, and goat cheese is so fresh and light--perfect for a summer night.  After raving about this salad for several days, I finally emailed my professor and she sent me the link to this Asparagus Salad with Roasted Peppers and Goat Cheese recipe on foodandwine.com. This salad is great for people...

Homemade Fig Jam

Since we're moving, Kyle and I are making an effort to clean out our cabinets.  Moving food really sucks, but so does throwing it away, so we've cut out going out to eat for a while.  One of the things I decided to tackle was my large stash of frozen fruit.  My grandmother gave me a ton of figs last summer (I think?), and I didn't have time to use them all up so I stuck them in the freezer until I could decide what to do with them.  While I really, really love eating fresh figs as a snack,...

Vanilla Pound Cake Recipe

Since we're moving within the next month, we're currently trying to clean out our cabinets.  The only thing worse than moving food is throwing it away.  I recently came into a large quantity of eggs (two and a half dozen!) from my grandmother, so I've been trying to use them up before they go bad.  One of my favorite things to make that uses a ton of eggs is pound cake.  We don't have a variety of ingredients, so I picked out this simple Vanilla Pound Cake recipe from Buttered Up, and still ended up having to substitute...

Homemade Thin Crust Pizza and Sauce

Both Kyle and I are currently unemployed. While we're really enjoying all the free time, we both have to be careful about how much money we spend, including on groceries. One of the cheapest and tastiest things we've been making lately is pizza. As it turns out, Kyle worked at a pizza place for a few years and has really been holding out on me as far as his pizza-making skills go! I found this wonderful thin-crust pizza recipe at Apartment Therapy's The Kitchn, and concocted this pretty simple, delicious pizza sauce recipe based...
